What is better than the holiday season? it’s all the wonderful baking that is done; not only in my home but in many homes baking it is one of the quintessential part of their lives specially during the holiday season. Weather you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or any beautiful holiday, we all create beautiful recipes passed down by our families. Today I want to share a recipe not passed down by any of my family members but it is one of my families favorite Pastelitos de Guayaba, they are absolutely delicious and in the Latin community we do love this delicate pastry and most of us always have it with a fantastic cup of coffee. It is not a difficult recipe to follow and not only can your children get involved in preparing them but if you decide not to add Guava, that is ok you can definitely add some Nutella and make it a delicious chocolatey dessert. As always I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!!

Ingredients
1 17 oz. package puff pastry sheets
1 10 ounce block guava paste
1 8 ounce package cream cheese at room temperature
1 large egg
1 tablespoon water
1/4 cup demerara sugar (can also use caster sugar
Directions
Step 1Preheat oven to 400°.
Step 2Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Step 3Transfer guava paste to a microwave safe bowl and heat in 20-30 second increments until it’s loose enough to stir. Set aside.
Step 4Place the cream cheese in another bowl and stir until creamy.
Step 5In a small bowl beat the egg and water with a fork. Set aside.
Step 6Roll out the puff pastry to a large square and use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut the pastry into 9 equal squares.
Step 7Spread a bit of cream cheese into the center of each square, leaving about 1/2″ border around the perimeter of the pastry. Top the cream cheese with a bit of guava paste.
Step 8Dip a pastry brush into the egg wash and brush it along the rim of each pastry square. Fold the pastry over the filling and press along the edges with the tines of a fork to seal. Use a sharp knife to make 3 slits in the top of the pastry so steam can escape. Transfer the pastries to the baking sheet. Continue in this manner with each pastry.
Step 9Brush the pastries with the rest of the egg wash and sprinkle the tops with demerara sugar. Bake for 10 minutes, then flip the baking sheet and continue to bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving
